I was able to attend the Get Motivated seminar that was held at the RBC center earlier this month. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was looking forward to an all star lineup of speakers. There were at least 15,000 people there looking for words of wisdom, advice, motivating ideas, and possibly some magic answers to the issues we deal with in our daily lives.
I heard some things that really rang true to me and made me think. Robert Schuler talked about when he was growing up the word impossible did not exist in their household. He was taught that anything is possible. His philosophy when things go wrong is “don’t look at what you’ve lost, look at what you have left”. I thought this was a great message given all the changes that have been occurring because of the economy, technological changes, and just the progression of our lives. I thought it was an interesting way to approach handling change.
Brian Tracy said some thought provoking statements. He commented that “we are busy being busy”. Being too busy seems to be something that applies to all of us these days. Even school children with all their activities, I wonder how they have time to study or sleep. Mr. Tracy commented that we need to identify those things we do that have value and focus on those. He said we need to do fewer things and more of those things. Then we can get better at doing those things. He was commenting on those things we do relative to generating income. I would also say that it can easily apply to all the things we do to fill our lives. Ever have days when you feel like you can’t get anything right? Maybe we are doing too many things and we don’t have time to focus on doing them well because we are too fragmented and always behind.
I also really liked the message from Rudy Giuliani. He commented about developing our own thinking. To do this he suggests we read a lot, listen to people – ask them a lot of questions and really listen to their answers, and to focus on what is important. He recommends that we create time for thinking. Take time to think about what is important and then set goals related to important things. He talked about 9-11, the events that occurred and his reaction – what he had to do. He gave us a great message. He said to prepare for everything you can think of so you’ll be prepared for those things you can’t think of. If you prepare for what you know or can imagine, then when things occur you haven’t imagined, you can take what you’re prepared for and apply it to the new situation. It carries my definition of wisdom further. I always define wisdom as knowledge plus experience.
These comments from these speakers were the most thought provoking for me. I wanted to share them with you and hope they will provide some ideas or insights for you. They certainly did for me.
